The Start:
Dan has been fishing for over 30 years and loving every minute of it. His best memories involve some form of competition, whether amongst his friends or on the first tournament - he never entered. The occasion was a tournament on Balsam Lake. Dan and his partner missed the blast off by almost an hour but he managed to get the blessings of the director to proceed as if they were part of the tournament. Off they went in a fourteen foot aluminum boat powered by only fifteen horsepower. Forty-five minutes before weigh-in, Dan and his partner returned with five bass that would have secured first place; if they were officially in the tournament.
That was all the incentive Dan needed to see that competition fishing was for him.
His next time up was more intimidating, especially at the sight of so many high powered bass boats and the big name professionals taking part. Not to worry, Dan was welcomed from the start and enjoyed the friendship of both the amateur and professional anglers that day. Dan thanks people like Mike Miller and Dave Mercer for the guidance they provided so Dan could pursue his dream of tournament fishing.
(Date of Birth) October 25, 1975
I was born and raised in Oshawa, Ontario. My love for the sport of fishing is endless. Although I fished my whole life I really started getting involved in bass tournaments about five years ago. Today I continue to live and work in Oshawa. I also do guiding on the Kawartha Lakes for bass and walleye. I got married in October of 2007 and I am now a proud father of a baby girl named Martina.
Home Lake
Balsam Lake in the Kawarthas would have to be my home lake because my parents have had a cottage there ever since I was born 30 plus years ago. If there are any weekends I am free from tournament fishing, you can be sure to find me on Balsam.
Fishing Hero
Besides my father who originally got me starting into fishing as a toddler and taught me the respect for nature on and off the water. I would have to say Kevin VanDam.
What is your favourite lure/presentation?
My favourite lure presentation is pitching a jig at docks and fallen trees with a lot of heavy wood cover. However through the years I have learned to like all sorts of lure presentations as long as they can keep putting fish in my boat. |
What Bass Tournament series are you fishing in 2009?
CSFL Pike Mania
WFN Canadian Open
Bass Mania Central Tour
Bass Mania Western Tour
Bass Mania Eastern Tour
Bass Mania Northern Tour
How did you get into Bass Fishing?
I got into bass fishing from my father taking me with him every weekend at the cottage on Balsam Lake . As years went on and I was able to go fishing on my own, I started experimenting different spots and artificial lures to gain the confidence I needed to one day fulfill my dream in becoming a professional bass angler. After gaining some confidence I entered small club derbies and had some success, so I thought that I would prove to myself and others that I can complete in the bigger bass tournaments.
What Canadian lakes do you like to fish?
There are several different lakes I like to fishing in Ontario . All of the lakes in the Bancroft and Halliburton area that hold bass are a fantastic choice. Not only can you catch a large number of bass but several over the 5 lbs and you are not fighting for the fishing hole. The breath taking scenery is also an added bonus. Balsam, Cameron, Sturgeon and Lake Simcoe are also great lakes to catch many bass and possibly the Canadian record.
What are the main differences between fishing Ontario Bass Tournament and the tournaments in the US ?
Although I have never fished a tournament in the United States I would love to. Apart from the entry fee and tournament costs I don't think that the talent of anglers in the states differ much from Canada. We too have a group of successful anglers.
How have your sponsors aided in your success as a tournament angler?
My sponsors have all helped me in different ways and to each I am thankful for such as (Finances) helping with expenses! (Product ) giving me the top products in the industry to be successful. (Exposure) giving me a chance to be seen and to meet new people, create more friends in and outside the fishing industry. All this support leads to less stress and more concentration on fishing which helps me become a better angler.
Closing Thoughts
If everyone that fishes can bring someone new into fishing, our sport will only get bigger and stronger.
