Focus on Fishing newspaper columnist Wil Wegman will be hosting an ice fishing seminar on Monday January 12 th from 7-9 pm at the De La Salle Hall in Jackson's Pt. Wegman, who won the 2006 Perch Trap Attack on Simcoe was also a member of Team Canada at the World Ice Fishing Championships in 1991. He has been teaching ice fishing courses at Seneca College since 1987 and for many years has presented his popular ice fishing seminars from Sudbury to Toronto and from Hamilton to Ottawa.
Wegman is excited about his seminar in Georgina Township. “This will be the first time we have had the opportunity to host one of them here, thanks to the Town of Georgina and the Georgina Advocate who made it happen. The Jackson's Point venue will be perfect with many avid ice anglers living within a half hour's drive” , he said.
His PowerPoint presentation will focus on ice fishing Lake Simcoe with particular emphasis on how to catch more yellow perch, northern pike, whitefish and lake trout this winter. “Lake Simcoe is a huge body of water and receives more fishing pressure than any other inland lake in the province. With all that hard water and all those other ice anglers, it can be a daunting lake to try and figure out. I hope ice anglers walk away from the evening having learned a thing or two to help them understand the lake and its fish a little more," he said.
With that knowledge and the tips and tricks Wegman will reveal on how to catch those fish … ice anglers of all skill levels are sure to find the evening both entertaining and rewarding.
Draw Prizes will be offered courtesy of HT Enterprises, Rapala/Normark, Berkley/Pure Fishing and Lowrance. Gerry Heels, a Lowrance Electronics rep will be on hand to answer questions about their sonar units and how to maximize their performance during the winter.

Wil Wegman (left) receives the 2006 National Fishing Week
Outdoor Writing Award
from Burt Myers, Executive Director of the Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association;
"For communicating the aims and ojbectives of National Fishing Week."
Wil's first place finish consisted of a beautifully inscribed mahogany plaque and a $600 cheque. His winning article "Respecting the Environment: Anglers Help Sustain Canadian Fisheries" was published by the Sun Media last year during National Fishing Week for newspapers in Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton and other major cities across Canada. The award was presented by Burt Myers, executive director of the Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association "for communicating the aims and objectives of National Fishing Week."
Wil said it was a pleasure writing that particular piece because it gave him a chance to highlight some of the outstanding fisheries related work done by so many volunteers across the country. "We seem to be more and more reliant on anglers who belong to groups like the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the Ontario BASS Federation Nation, Trout Unlimited and so many others, to ensure that our great fisheries are there for future generations. This often means long hours of hard work for the folks who would much rather go fishing, but they make the sacrifices so that all anglers - and the aquatic environment will benefit," he said.
Wil has been a member of the OWC since 1986 and has had fishing articles published in Canadian magazines like Ontario Out of Doors, Outdoor Canada, Real Fishing and Just Fishing, as well as US publications like Bassmaster, In Fisherman and BASS TIMES. Wil currently writes regularly for the Fish On Line Canada website www.fishonlineca.com and his weekly newspaper column called "Focus On Fishing" can be found Thursdays in the Georgina Advocate
Wil also volunteers as the Conservation and Media Director for the Ontario BASS Federation Nation and teaches bass fishing courses at Seneca College 's Continuing Education Department. He can be reached at: media@ontariobass.com
